Abstract: This research addresses the perspectives of both ancient and modern grammarians with regards to grammatical factors. The factor was defined lexically and contextually, then the types of factors, whether explicit or implicit, standard or non-standard were defined, and the research also presents the history of the factor theory. In light of the various perspectives of Arab grammarians concerning the grammatical factor and the factor theory, the study discussed the perspectives of ancient and modern grammarians with regards to the grammatical factor. It concentrated on the grammarians who acknowledged the existence of the grammatical factor and its influence on the study of the sentence and its structure, such as the ancient grammarian “Sibawayh” whose perspectives indicate that he believes in the existence of the grammatical factor and its theory. However, the perspectives of modern grammarians; such as Abdel Qadir Al-Fasi Al-Fahri and Ahmad Al-Mutawakil indicate that they do not acknowledge the existence of the grammatical factor, and they created theories which replaced the factor theory. Then the study discussed the criticism of grammatical factor; as it addressed the perspectives of several Arab grammarians, such as Hasan Khamees Al-Milh, Mohammad Hamaseh Abdel-Latif, Nihad Al-Musa, Tammam Hassan and Khalil Ahmad Amayreh. The study was concluded with deductive views which were derived from reading some books and thesis, and that were not based on personal views but rather on the belief in the importance of the factor theory and its considerable role in Arabic grammar both anciently and recently.
