Since English is an international language, university students regardless of their specializations need English in pursuing their studies and communicating with foreigners. The course emphasizes all language skills, and aims to improve your English in these skills. It provides clear and straightforward guidance in the basics of English language while focusing on the sort of language people use in everyday communication. Learners have access to varied interesting course materials, wide range of resources for language learning, and up to date audio and visual lessons which are relevant to everyday life. The topics in this course are contemporary and as relevant as possible to the student needs. Language and fluency are developed through debates, discussions and presentations. Students will cover language skills such as justifying opinions, describing and talking about notable people, problem solving, discussing new ideas and innovations. The course consists of five learning units. Each unit consists of four components: Reading, Grammar, Language use and Writing respectively. Students, through their self-study of the course, have good opportunities to develop their language skills easily.

Learning Outcomes

Unit One

Reading Strategies

English Language Proficiency is a general remedial course that is meant to improve your proficiency in English language skills . As you know, English is an international language and the language of science. Thus, a reasonable proficiency in English is essential for you. Unit one is divided into four sections: Reading , language use, grammar, and writing. The first section focuses on a reading text which reinforces your knowledge of reading strategies as skimming and scanning. The second covers one aspect of Language functions: giving and seeking advice. It helps you to master various ways of giving advice to somebody or asking others for a piece of advice.

Unit Two

Poet of Resistance

This unit consists of four sections: Reading , grammar, language use and writing respectively. You shall read a short passage on a famous Palestinian character , Mahmoud Darwish , known as “Poet of Resistance.” This part enables you to understand a text and find main points. For grammatical component, it is limited to discuss the main uses of Present Simple and Present Continuous Tenses. The third section, language use, classifies invitations into formal and informal. Moreover, it provides you with examples on accepting and declining an invitation . Finally, the writing section covers some of Punctuation Marks.

Unit Three

Jerusalem

This is the third unit of your course. It consists of four sections: Reading , grammar, language use and writing respectively. The first contains a reading text on Jerusalem, The Capital of the State of Palestine, followed by some questions that reinforce your comprehension of the text. The second is a grammatical component. It deals with Past Simple, Past Continuous and Present Perfect. The third is language use. It paves your way to follow the right directions by asking for or giving instructions. Finally, the fourth section is writing. It concentrates on paragraph writing.

Technology

Unit four consists of four sections. The first is a reading text on the use of Facebook in classrooms. The second introduces the form and use of Passive Voice in English. The third explains one of the language functions: Complaining. The fourth section enables you to write an email.

Business: Money & Banks

Unit five, as previous units, consists of four sections: Reading, grammar, language use and writing respectively. The first is a reading text on money and banks. The second concentrates on forming questions. The third deals with expressions and phrases that one could use to be polite in communication. The fourth section is for writing a C.V.
