This unit has dealt with cause and effect. First, the nature of cause and effect was discussed. Secondly, it was shown how cause and effect could occur in one and the same sentence as well as between sentences. This can be achieved by using explicit forms, or it can be implicitly indicated through the logic of cause and effect. Organization of cause and effect in the sentences and discourse was also examined. Like comparison and contrast, cause and effect, may occur at the sentences, paragraph and text levels. Cause and effect sequence can be explicit and implicit. The cause and effect sequence may be expressed by itself or in conjunction with other functions of language such as comparison, contrast, argument, classification, description and so on.
